Lisbon Tour - Top 10 Places To Visit In Lisbon (Part 2)

Welcome to the second part about interesting places to visit in Lisbon. I just wanted to say that, even though these are probably the ones that every tourist visits when they travel to Lisbon, this city as much more to offer, and it would be almost impossible to cover every single location, that's why i picked this format, just to give a general idea of what you can find in the Portugues capital.

This Cathedral started to be built in 1147, but suffered many alterations, on the following centuries, mainly architectural and artistic enrichment's, such as the Sacristy from the half 17th century. Nevertheless, most of the works were done in the beginning of the 20th century, with the purpose to restore the primary medieval atmosphere of the Cathedral, that shelters a diversified collection of silver, ecclesiastical suits, relics, statues, and manuscripts.

It’s worth mentioning that the Cathedral can be found on the way to the São Jorge Castle, so if you plan to visit the second there’s no excuse to skip this impressive monument.

Not far from the São Jorge Castle, you can find one of the most interesting monuments of Lisbon’s historical centre: The Santa Justa Elevator built in a Gothic Revival Romantic style, and inaugurated in 1902. It has approximately 45 meters, and each of the two cabins have capacity for 45 persons, and you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view over the city at centre at the elevator’s top.

One of the most remarkable examples of Portuguese engineering, the Águas Livres Aqueduct has been supplying the town of Lisbon of its waters since 1748. It stretches for about 14 Km since the main spring, with several subsidiary aqueducts, with a total of more than 58 Km. In it’s most monumental part (as you can see in the picture on the right), the aqueduct has a set of 35 arches, covering 941 m, with the tallest ones reaching a height of 65 m.

In the present it is deactivated, so this masterpiece of engineering can be visited as part of the Water Museum.

After having a face lift, the historic Lisbon Zoo (with more than 120 years) holds more than 2000 animals distributed by 364 species. With many new enclosures and some enlargements of existing exhibits, the Zoo took a step into the modern world, and is now able to meet international standards.

Since Ajuda was one of the Lisbon less affected quarters by the 1755 earthquake, the Portuguese Royal Family decided to move to this part of the city, and a temporary wooden house was built while the contruction of the palace was not finished. Despite of the magnificence of the plan, there were many interruptions, and even today

Featuring neo-classical elements, and exotic rooms, the palace was transformed in a Museum, and is now the headquarters of the Portuguese Cultural Department and hosts many of the presidential ceremonies.
